Post Bloom Fruit Drop (Colletotrichum acutatum) can be devastating for citrus groves if sufficient moisture is available during bloom periods, which is now. PFD can cause 20% to 80% fruit drop depending on the season.Spores of this fungus are produced directly on the surface of the petals and are splash-dispersed by rain to healthy flowers with infection occuring rapidly and infection can be noticable within 4 to 5 days. The fungus also survives on the stems, leaves and buttons between blooming periods. Groves with a history of PFD need to be checked twice a week during the bloom period. The removal of declining trees will help reduce innoculum as those trees tend to have off season blooms which result in constant disease pressure.Strobilurins such as Headline have long since been the standard for PFD control, but with the introduction of Provysol, a new group 3 fungicide that is effective against PFD, this offers an excellent alternative to manage your PFD issues.
