This isn't the greasy spot on your clothes that your mother used to clean with stain cleaner. I am referring to a chronic pathogen that attacks all varieties of citrus called greasy spot (Mycosphaerella citri). Greasy spot is a disease in citrus that is most severe in early summer as the spores are ejected off the dying foliage underneath the tree onto the existing foliage on the tree. The spores are released into the wind in response to leaf wetting from rain, irrigation or heavy dew. Symptoms are yellow to dark brown or black lesions occuring underside of mature leaves. Fruit can also be infected with greasy spot and appears as small black necrotic spots on the fruit surface which makes the fruit cosmetically unattractive and difficult to sell on the fresh market. This disease on the fruit is typically referred to as greasy spot rind blotch.Provysol, a new group 3 fungicide that is highly effective against greasy spot provides a new alternative to conventional fungicides or copper typically used in the past. Take a listen to Dr. John Curtis of Better Crops LLC., a local consultant, on his experience with Provysol for greasy spot management in citrus.
