As with any sampling that is done on the farm, there are some best practices that should be followed for nematode sampling.
The best time to sample for Soybean Cyst Nematodes or other nematode species is after the crop has been harvested in the fall. As time passes and the crop is no longer living, the numbers of nematodes collected can decline compared with the pressure that could be expected in the crop the following year. Once a need to sample is identified, finding a lab to perform the analysis is the next step. Many labs are available to perform the counts, with some states even offering this service to growers for free.
After identifying your lab and fields, it is time to sample. The best practices for sampling are to take approximately 15 to 20 samples per 20-acre zone within the field at a depth of 8 inches. The more samples combined to form a composite sample, the better idea of pressure the counts will reveal. Different areas of the field can have varying pressure based on compaction, soil type, and drainage. If one area is of specific concern based on unexpected low yields, it can be sampled separately to get a more accurate idea without influencing the samples from the rest of the field.
After samples are collected, proper care is required. The blended samples should be placed in a sample bag and kept out of direct sunlight or heat. An easy solution for days where the temperatures are moderate is an empty cooler. This keeps them out of the sun and provides a good container to transport them prior to shipping.
When the results come back from the lab, it is time to make decisions. If numbers are high based on your local thresholds, action will be required whether it is crop rotation to a non-host crop, host-plant resistance, or a seed applied nematicide such as ILEVO® seed treatment from BASF. ILEVO is a broad spectrum nematicide that protects your soybeans from SCN and other nematode pests that may be present in your fields.
Please reach out to your local BASF representative if you have any questions about nematode sampling, SCN, thresholds, or ILEVO seed treatment. Read and follow all label directions.
