Corn yield loss from corn rootworm is on the rise and has cost the US corn crop an estimated 600 million bushels in 2021. In previous articles, I shared the corn rootworm biology, resistance issues, and the need for a new tool for resistance management.
Nurizma® insecticide has been recently approved and is now available for growers. Because Nurizma insecticide is a unique mode of action for corn rootworm, it is an effective resistance management tool to help growers control corn rootworm populations that may become resistant to Bt traits and other in-furrow insecticides.

Broflanilide, the active ingredient in Nurizma® insecticide, binds to an inner-subunit allosteric site of the GABA receptor, resulting in a block of inhibitory neurotransmission, convulsions, and death of target insects. It is classified by the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) as a Group 30 insecticide (GABA-gated chloride channel allosteric modulators). It is the first and only group 30 insecticide available for corn rootworm control.
