What is the Provisia^® Rice System and how does it work?

The Provisia^® Rice System is comprised of Provisia^® seed containing the Provisia^® trait, which allows growers to safely apply Provisia^® Herbicide. Used in rotation with the Clearfield^® Production System for rice, growers can plant a rice-rice-soybean rotation, and an optional fourth year of conventional rice. You also get the flexibility to grow more rice over multiple seasons, while rotating different herbicide modes of action (ALS, ACCase) for sustainable management of all resistant rice types and annual grasses.

Provisia^® Rice Seed Traits

Start Clean: 

The foundation of weed control lies in a clean field. Before planting Provisia^® rice, utilize effective burndown herbicides or tillage to eliminate existing weeds. For growers transitioning from the Clearfield^® Production System, be mindful of herbicide selection during the burndown phase. Avoid ALS-inhibiting and Emy herbicides, as they can negatively impact the Provisia Rice System's performance.

Crop Rotation:

A Win-Win Strategy: Introducing crops like soybeans or corn in your rotation plan offers several benefits. It disrupts weed life cycles by depleting weed seed banks in the soil and minimizing the risk of resistance development in both weeds and rice.

The Power of Multiple Applications: 

A single Provisia herbicide application might not be enough for heavily weed-infested fields. A two- or three-pass system, strategically timed, provides superior control and reduces the chances of weeds developing resistance.

Precision is Key: 

To ensure optimal results, follow the herbicide label's instructions regarding application rates and timing. Don't deviate from the recommended rates, as under-application can lead to poor weed control and accelerate resistance. Use the recommended rates (11 oz on 2-leaf rice, 10 oz on 5-leaf rice, 10 oz post-flood) to balance weed control and minimize crop injury. Consider three applications for heavy weedy rice infestations.

Tank Mixes:

Use tank mixes with approved partners to control broadleaf weeds and other grasses. Avoid Propanil, Regiment, Triclopyr, Penoxsulam, and 2,4-D as they can antagonize Provisia^® Rice.

Water Management Matters: 

Effective water management plays a vital role in weed suppression. Flooding the field as soon as possible following herbicide application maximizes weed control.

Prolong the Power of Flooding: 

While timely flooding is essential, prolonging the flood duration whenever possible further restricts weed growth and development. Aim to keep the floodwater on the field for the longest practical period.

General Weed Management

Cleanliness is Key: 

Maintaining clean equipment and using certified weed-free seed helps prevent the introduction and spread of weeds throughout your fields.

Gallons per Acre:

• Use a minimum of 10 gallons per acre spray volume for good coverage.
• Adjuvants: Use the correct adjuvants as recommended on the herbicide label.

Residual Herbicides:

Include residual herbicides such as Facet^® L Herbicide and Prowl^® H2O Herbicide in the tank mixes for long-term weed control.

Scouting for Success:

Regular field scouting allows for early detection of weed problems. Prompt identification and action can prevent small infestations from escalating into major issues.
