Adult beetles can be observed feeding on soybean leaves. Bean leaf beetles are oval-shaped, roughly 5 mm long & have four, large, quadrangular black markings on their forewings. In some cases, there may only be two rectangular marks or none at all. In all cases, the constant identifier is the black triangle at the neck. Feeding appears as “shotholes” on the leaves.
Damage has to be extensive on leaf feeding, roughly 40-60% defoliation, to justify a treatment. The greatest concern is in-season pod feeding. Pod feeding can cause the plant to abort individual seed development. Pod feeding can also transfer bean pod mottle virus to the developing seeds.
Seed treatments w/clothianidin (Poncho®) greatly reduces feeding. Fastac® SC insecticide is a great option for in-season control.
