Failures in grass control in 2019 were reported throughout crop production areas from lack of PRE residual grass herbicide use, POST herbicide tank-mix antagonism and buildup of glyphosate resistance to barnyardgrass, junglerice and goosegrass. University of Tennessee Extension Weed Specialist, Larry Steckel discussed on UTCROPS.com in mid march (New Thoughts on Pre-emergence Options in Cotton) that the grass struggles have many looking to change their upfront weed management program in cotton. The most frequent question has been the best Pre-emergence option. Prowl H2O, by far, is the one most growers have decided to go with in 2020.Dr. Steckel agrees Prowl H2O is a good option as well and recommends Prowl H2O be partnered with fluometuron (Cotoran) to help with Palmer amaranth management.
Prowl H2O can be tank-mixed with preplant burndown herbicides and can be impregnated on dry bulk fertilizer. It is also a group 3 site of action herbicide which will take the selection pressure off the group 15 herbicides like Outlook. In Summary, Pendimethalin (Prowl H2O) has historically been a strong residual foundation herbicide for cotton with application flexibilty (PP, PPI, PRE) through planting for annual grass (barnyardgrass, junglerice, goosegrass) and small-seeded broadleaf (Palmer amaranth) control.
The choice for 2020 is to go back to the future with Prowl H2O to manage grass weed problems in cotton.
