As we are close to beginning harvest, it's a fun time to watch the crop mature. As you analyze your soybeans, are you happy with your weed control for the season? Are there escapes? What weed species are the escapes?
In our area, marestail is still an issue. So is giant ragweed. And, waterhemp spread this year like crazy. These weeds take a strong burndown and residual PRE, and they all require an effective POST burndown and maybe a POST residual too.
The good news is that we have the tools to control these weeds. Step one is choosing the right seed, specifically the correct trait. In studying our Credenz and Xitavo variety plot in Albion, MI yesterday, I was very impressed with the weed control. These beans all carry either the Enlist E3 or LLGT27 traits. Zidua PRO was used as the foundation PRE, and was followed by Liberty and glyphosate POST. Wow, CLEAN!
Please think about your trait choices for 2021. Select traits that give you options. Select traits that give you an effective POST tool that kills your problem weeds and that you are comfortable spraying (ie Liberty). One potential pain point: Your current seed provider may or may not offer the traits that are right for your farm. This may require you to look at other options for 2021. The industry is changing like crazy right now, and not all seed companies carry the same seed traits.
Remember, it is YOUR farm. Be open and think critically, and do what is right for you. If you would like any help navigating the options, please reach out.
