Although planting in ND/northern MN was roughly a month behind schedule this season, the emerged small grains (wheat and barley) look excellent with great subsoil moisture and now some warmer temperatures. Stands are are strong with these later planting dates and the crop will continue to grow rapidly, with increasing soil temperatures. Remember that a Plant Health fungicide application at herbicide timing with Priaxor or Nexicor to wheat or barley can create a much healthier crop via protection from key seedling diseases such as tan spot. This application will also allow the crop to maximize it's growth efficiency and minimize natural stresses. A 3-year data summary from North Dakota State shows a 3 bu/A yield increase over untreated and a 2.4 bu/A yield increase over propiconazole fungicides. With this said, don't overlook the importance of this herbicide timing BASF fungicide application as your wheat or barley crop continues to progress rapidly.
