Take Your Soybean PRE Up a Notch with Engenia

Odds are that you have heard utilizing multiple, effective modes of action is a great approach to weed management and preventing herbicide resistance, and this is true. An example of this is the increased level of control we see when including Engenia as a part of your soybean PRE residual herbicide application, especially when your weed pressure is high. I would like to shine some light on a trial this year in southern Illinois that does a great job of illustrating what Engenia has to offer in a very tough situation!

In the picture above, we see Zidua SC applied solo as a pre-emergence herbicide. Don't let this picture deceive you, as Zidua SC is still doing a great job of holding back heavy grass pressure and waterhemp when this picture was taken 35 days after it was applied! However, we can see the gaps in the spectrum of control, specifically large-seeded broadleaf weeds velvetleaf, giant ragweed, and common ragweed. This is why we recommend a tankmix partner with Zidua SC, such as Engenia. That's exactly what we have in the picture below, and the difference is immediately clear. Engenia helped pick up the weeds that Zidua SC didn't control and made for a great combination as a soybean PRE.

In the picture below, we see that Zidua PRO did a great job as a PRE herbicide, bringing a similar level of control that we see with the Zidua SC + Engenia combination. This isn't a surprise, as the components of Zidua PRO offer a broad spectrum of control across a variety of weed species and types. However, we still saw an advantage when including Engenia, as it took a step up from great to almost spotless!

The trend continues when we look at a competitor soybean PRE. Authority Supreme did a decent job of holding back the grasses and small-seeded broadleaves, however it clearly struggled with some of the large-seeded species. Again, including Engenia helped pick up some of those large-seeded broadleaf weeds and increased the spectrum of control.

Weed control is not getting any easier, and our tools are limited. We need to make sure that we are utilizing the technologies that are available, and that includes Engenia. Although Engenia applications can be challenging at times, we know that earlier applications can be more flexible and can still provide benefits. So if you are looking for a way to incorporate Engenia into your program, put it to work early and use it to enhance your soybean PRE herbicide program.
