In 2020, tar spot made the jump from the Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic and was confirmed in Lancaster County, PA. Knowing how this disease spread across the Midwestern states it's not surprising that it has continued to spread across the region into New York, Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia.

As the 2023 season comes to an end and we are looking forward to 2024, now is the time to make decisions about your fungicide program. Tar spot can cause major yield losses and should be thought about when making decisions about your disease control program. However, don’t forget about other diseases like gray leaf spot and northern corn leaf blight that have been problems for growers long before tar spot was found in the US. Luckily, for growers fungicides like Veltyma® fungicide and Headline® AMP fungicide from BASF have all three of these diseases on the label. Tar spot best-use recommendations are below, but well-timed applications for tar spot control will also lead to control of gray leaf spot and northern corn leaf blight.
