Research suggests that 43% of people quit their New Year’s resolution by the end of January1. Every year, growers strategize to make a more effective plan to combat weed pressure in the field. However, too many times we hear of growers not including an effective residual in their herbicide applications and regretting it due to the flush of weeds that show back up later in the season. Palmer amaranth can grow 2.5 times faster than soybean seedlings2! So as you sit down to go over your list of things you want to accomplish in 2024, let’s make it a goal to be proactive in our herbicide applications instead of reactive by including an effective residual in the tank.

BASF has some of the most effective residual herbicides on the market today! Outlook® herbicide at 16 fl oz/a or Zidua® SC herbicide at 3.25 fl oz/a provide weeks of outstanding residual weed control. Take a look at this BASF funded field trial from Crawfordsville, Arkansas, in 2023 that showcases the importance of applying an effective residual like Outlook® herbicide or Zidua SC® herbicide vs. other residual herbicides at planting. This soybean field started off clean until it was planted in soybeans on May 7th, and residual herbicides were sprayed on May 9th.

Outlook® herbicide at 16 fl oz/a shows excellent weed control compared to other residual products, even a month after application! Outlook® herbicide only requires ¼” rainfall for activation, has consistent performance, broad-spectrum weed control, and is flexible across different crops (soybeans, cotton, and corn).
Below are photographs from the same trial, highlighting the superior control that Zidua® SC herbicide at 3.25 fl oz/a brings to the table. Zidua® SC herbicide at 3.25 fl oz/a has superior control of waterhemp and Palmer amaranth at such a low use rate! Zidua® SC herbicide requires ¾” rainfall for activation.

When you don’t put an effective residual in your PRE-pass, you make it more difficult to control the weeds in your POST pass. Make sure you start the year off right by putting an effective residual in your tank so you can help alleviate headaches later in the season. Season-long competition by Palmer amaranth at 2.5 plants per foot of row can reduce soybean yield by as much as 79%3.
Be proactive, make an effective, timely PRE-application, and layer residuals in the tank throughout the season. Spraying different modes of action can help mitigate resistance and ensure you are taking a proactive strategy to weed control. Add an effective residual like Zidua® SC herbicide at 3.25 fl oz/a or Outlook® at 16 fl oz/a to your PRE-pass to get weeks of residual control and set yourself up for a more successful POST pass. Don’t give up on your goals in 2024; help control the weeds before they start growing by including an effective residual herbicide like Zidua® SC herbicide or Outlook® herbicide in the tank.
Before mixing components, always conduct a compatibility jar test. Always consult respective product labels for specific mixing instructions. The most restrictive label applies.
