We are starting to see emerging soybeans w/a browning/burned appearance on their cotyledons. Growers are asking if the soybean plant will die? If you planted soybeans early and treated with ILEVO® seed treatment, you may be experiencing such an observation.
When ILEVO seed treatment is applied, you may observe this “halo effect." Cooler/wetter conditions can increase the severity of the sunburn-like appearance. This is temporary, and occurs when cotyledons are pulled up through soil and sunlight interacts with the chemical in the edges of the cotyledons causing a sunburn-like discoloration. Cut the cotyledons in half and you will see healthy, green tissue.
Do not worry, this is just an indication that ILEVO seed treatment is working to protect the plant from the fungus that causes sudden death syndrome and your soybean plants are healthy.
